Whats my gift? – let’s try a radical approach – the DEEP END
A lot of people ask me, “how can I find out whats my gift”?
That’s like an army recruit asking boot camp instructor when they sign up at BASIC training, what’s my specialty Sarge!?! It doesn’t work like that. You go into the army, you get trained all round, you go to combat, you distinguish yourself in the field and your superiors spot your talent and your orders get “cut” accordingly. They PLACE you.
Here’s my little piece on it. I started out in one thing ended up where I am today. If I conclude honestly after the time I’ve spent in the “field”… If you wanna know you’re gift two things are important…
- Get saved and get to know God (BASIC Training)
- Be available to serve. The heart of service is more important to God than the type of service you pick or think you’re picked for that THEN convinces you ok now I can serve because I know what to do.
Get saved and get close to God. Then make yourself available to the Holy Spirit. Just like the disciples. They were all sent out. They all participated in a number of different types of ministries. But each one later on was singled out and assigned different ministries that they are eventually well reknown for.
Curiouser and curiouser.
There’s a spanner in that as well.
Discipleship is BASIC. Everyone needs to be able to pass on to others their experiences of getting to know God. They also need to pass on any teachings they have learnt and assist others to be able to learn for themselves.
“Go ye therefore and make DISCIPLES of all nations”. That is not only a commandment, seems to be like its universally applicable. How you interpret that is between you and God. But somewhere out there is someone in your path, that God wants you to pass something onto. For some it might be passing on the tools of the trade for Christian counselling. You pick that up and pass it on. For others it might be coaching and sport in a Christian “sports club” kinda setting that you pass on to someone else. Others it might preaching or teaching that you pick up, that you pass on to someone else.
God’s kingdom is about being a conduit a channel a funnel of blessings. We aren’t vaults or squirrels who horde the best things God has to offer for ourselves. We receive so we can give so others can believe.
And as for what is my gift…I think God at this point in our history just looking for willing hearts and minds.
Because packaging and confining what you can do for God with what seems right after a survey of gifts and talents, or focusing single-mindedly, to the exclusion of that still small voice, on what your good at is also just as much a comfort zone as anything else.
Conclusion…whats Andrew saying? Do everything and anything?
No. Too many people are sitting and waiting to be sure they find what they’re “good” at. But remember the economy of God sees no value in what you’re good at. But most importantly, what your willing to let God use you for.
I’m saying simply, its more important to God that you’re heart is willing to do something. With humility and sacrifice, you make your heart available to Him. He then will guide you from that point.
Get up and do something, and stop waiting for lightning to strike you before you decide your “eligible” or “qualified” to serve God “on the right track”. Just get up. WHEN you get up. He’ll see you stand then PUT YOU on the path. Ask anyone who’s been serving for a while. Alotta times, you find yourself doing stuff for God you are more than convinced you are qualified for. Or many times, you start in place and you get SENT to another place. I never saw my self as an author of these devotions I’m writing to you at 1:30 am. I just wanted to serve God. Started with lesson study in high school now I honestly can’t really put a single collective name to the stuff I get up to or want to get up to. We’re all like cars coming off the assembly line. Our tanks our empty. We need to be filled. Once we got gas in our tanks. We can go anywhere, anytime with anything in our seats or trunks.

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
If you’re willing pray this prayer with me if you would like your walk to be more intimate with God’s plans and the amazing experience of being thrown into the deep end.
“Holy Spirit, I get so caught up in being right and being ready, I forget to ask you if you need any volunteers for anything. Please use me. I’m here raising my hand. You are Sovereign. You are my Comforter and my Guide, won’t you please come into my heart and Teach me to be a vessel. The clay that doesn’t ask the Potter what He’s going to make or the wood that doesn’t ask the Carpenter what He’s going to shape. Holy Spirit, my Lord Jesus, I’m done thinking my ideas are great. The Bible says and it is true, that Your great ideas are so high above mine, as far as the heavens is from the earth…make me proof to the world just how great Your ideas are. And I will bless Your name and teach the world the glory of God in my life time. Lord…make me an eternal legacy of divine inspiration. In Jesus name. Amen.”
To one and all, whether you can pray that prayer yet or not, shalom on you, on your family and all your loved ones. Whether you believe this stuff or not, whoever’s reading this, know that there are strangers out there who love you and want and wish only the best for you. May you find fulfillment, peace, and most importantly may you find God. He loved you enough to bleed out on a piece of wood that said thousands of years ago “come forth”. He shamed Himself. He abominated Himself. He cursed Himself. So that we could be unashamed. So that we could be elevated. So that we could be blessed. So get up. Its your turn now. Go bless somebody. Yesterday and your past don’t matter. Now matters. Receive the Holy Spirit.
