Fantasy and fiction to tell the truth

God uses fantasy and fiction to teach truth. Humans occassionally do the same but mostly we use it to escape the truth. To escape life. Or to just …escape.
Vi veri verniversum vivus vicci – By the power of truth, I while living, have conquered the universe.

You can’t say that you say? Maybe we’re reading different books but I recall a story in the Bible about a prodigal son. A fiction, a fantasy, a fairytale used by God to tell or teach a truth. Jesus recongises that sometimes coming at someone head on will only push them away. Jesus realised that it is in human nature to run from reality. So sometimes God uses the fantasy to help us to face up to reality.

And here is the truth of that story. That God like the father, will stand outside the gates of heaven at the door of your soul, looking off into the far horizon of your heart, …knocking, waiting…hoping. Yes God hopes over you. He doesn’t force you. You say but He knows the futures. And I respond just because He does, doens’t make it any less easier for Him to wait over you. Probably makes it harder. Imagine knowing tomorrow that I will hurt you but today you continue to love me as if there’s no tomorrow!

Why do humans dream of being gods!?! We’re out of our little minds. Can you bear the heartache of a God? Can you love while being hurt? Can you forgive in advance and act as if tomorrows betrayal will never come?

Can you prepare your cheeks to be slapped so you can turn the other?

Can you prepare your back, buttocks, thighs and calves to be whipped? Imagine living tomorrow today…and still hoping wishing longing for the people who will beat and whip you tomorrow, that they might make the choice to live a better fuller happier holier life today.

Imagine knowing tomorrow you will raise the dead, but in a hour or so, one of the people who loves you most on earth will tell you to your face you’re a liar and a un-trustworthy. People can’t depend on you. Cause you have the power to change the world but you always seem to turn up or answer late. Anyone out there feel God always answers late….if at all? Yet you love Him so much? Mary accused Jesus with tears in her eyes. We so easily blame and scream at God. But it tore Mary’s heart, though her brother was 4 days dead and rotting, it TORE Mary’s heart apart to accuse Christ of betrayal. Do you know Jesus appreicated her reverent venting? Do you God loved her just that little bit more because of her heartbroken screaming? Don’t hold back the depths of your heart from God. Even in struggle, give God exactly and fully whats there. But be like Mary, be like Jeremiah, be like Elijah..when you feel God has let you down VENT, rant scream and rave but make sure it hearts! Make sure that you’re venting because you feel you’re going to be lost. Make sure it doesn’t even make sense, it barely sinks in your mind that God could let you down.

Never stop being surprised in your life when it feels like God isn’t coming through for you! Be naïve, be childish, be shocked when God is quiet. DON’T GET USED TO SILENCE!…dont get used to God going quiet on you.

Because like the story says…and the story isn’t even true…but the truth of it is. God is like that Father wating each day…standing outside the gates of heaven at the threshold of your heart. Hoping for your head to peek over the horizon of your choices in life.

Whats beauitful about that story is too things. One…even though you’re so caught up in your mess up, you can’t see God running towards you until BAM, He slams in to you with joyous laughter and welcome. I remember the sound of my dad’s laughter when I was a kid and he was happy to see me. It makes you feel so BIG so FULL so strong. I remember. That’s what the prodigal son remembered. That’s what he trusted in. The Truth of that story is that some part of you remembers the laughter and love of God. You can’t explain it. You just know if you go back He won’t turn you away. It makes no sense.

The other beautiful thing about that story is that the Father RAN. He didn’t wait for the son to get to the door stop or gate post. The FATHER ran TO the son. And Jesus said…your Father in heaven is like that. The moment your heart WANTS to be okay with God, the MILLISECOND flicker or repentance, before you even finish lifting up your head BAM there comes God who sw you far away and started running.

Do you know God doesn’t get embarassed? Do you know God’s love doesn’t understand shame or pride? God’s love is foolishness! God’s resolve and decision to be angry with you is WEAK! I’ve got close close people in my life that I really can’t stay angry at. Barely lasts 5 minutes if at all. Weird. But its taught me. I understand. I wish I was more like God.

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

So whats the final or biggest truth in the fiction? That God will make a fool of Himself to win you back. God will love you and no one will understand. That God will welcome you home when you’re filthy and you stink and are nothing but an embarassment to Him. That God will prepare a party (go slaughter the fatted calf)  in advance for when you come up that hill. Its a reality you can depend on and a challenge to us in our lives.

When will we be foolishly forgiving?

When will we be weakly angry?

When will we be naively welcoming?

When will we be willing to love the unloveable even when those closest to us (the older brother) don’t understand and actually get angry with us!?

When will we love and be like God?

When will we lovingly forgetful?

When will we give the people who wrong us, our clothes and cover them with our robes!?! When will we give those who need it from us most, our goodness and our cleanness and cover their filth with ourselves.

When will we be like that Father…and hug them, though they stink?

We don’t forgive the forgiveable. That’s easy. We forgive those who have hurt us most. That….is why the saying goes… “to err is human…to forgive divine”.

This is what MAD is about. The mind-blowing grace of God. The life-changing forgiveness of God. And the the UNFAIR favour of God. Maybe someone in your life needs a fantasy to make the grace of God a true story. Are you that fantasy? Are you that fiction or fairytale? Are you a living parable? Are you a Godchaser? A Jesuslover? A Jehovahworshipper?

Are you MAD for Christ

 (New King James Version)
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there isknowledge, it will vanish away.

These things only come through the Holy Spirit.
God isn’t human. And you…reading this email are MORE than human.
