Placebo – are you gonna get better, experience better?

Below is a definition of the medical term placebo. Or what is called the placebo effect.

“A placebo (Latin I shall please) simulated medical intervention that can produce a (perceived or actual) improvement, called a placebo effect.

In one common placebo procedure, a patient is given an inert pill, told that it may improve his/her condition, but not told that it is in fact inert. Such an intervention may cause the patient to believe the treatment will change his/her condition; and this belief may produce a subjective perception of a therapeutic effect , causing the patient to feel their condition has improved. This phenomenon is known as the placebo effect.

Another term for it is “meaning response” for the meaning the brain associates with the placebo, which causes a physiological placebo effect”

In English. When a patient is told they could…key word…possibly get better and are given a pill made up of just sugar and they get better. Whats happened? The pill looks like the real thing. But it has no effect. Yet just by getting told. The patients sometimes improve. So patients don’t.

Now I want you to note 3 things.

  1. Patients are told something
  2. Some improve and some don’t
  3. For those who improve or for those who don’t, neither one has ANY evidence about the outcome of taking the pill. Remember even the ones who don’t get better, don’t know they arent taking real medicine.

Now question…. Why do some get better and some don’t. Why is it, if people are convinced that they can get better they do. And the same way if they are convinced they wont then they don’t.

Why do some people seem to be happy victorious Christians and some don’t. Why do some people seem to really believe that God can change their circumstances and some don’t.

Does any of this sound familiar? Read below some scripture

Hebrews 11
By Faith We Understand
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Romans 12
Living Sacrifices to God
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Any words stick out for you from these two verses?

Evidence?
Prove?

Now saints lovers of God, children of the royal court of Adonai, sons and daughters of Yahweh….I know its hard sometimes.

I know its hard to believe sometime when things get rough. I also know its hard to stick to your belief when things get good but you think its got nothing to do with God just hardwork.

I know going through stuff isnt easy. I honestly wish sometimes, when I see people working this faith thing through, I wish there were an easier way to get this thing done! I wish people didn’t have to be tested or tried. I wish people didn’t have to grow. In same way kids wish they could go to sleep and wake up adults the next day. But then what would happen to all those experiences. All the growing pains that are so beautiful when you look back. I wish you could undo some of your mistakes. But your mistakes are part of what has made you who you are today, and for some of you, your mistakes, never catching God by surprise, are an opportunity to make youre testimony shine bigger than many. I’m not saying God endorses pain. I’m saying He can work with it. I’m not saying God is into hypnosis or mind control. I am saying then when you make up your mind, grace steps in to cover even eventualities you’ll never know about till you get to heaven.

I am saying, that sometimes, Jesus looks at us, from the top of a hill overlooking Jerusalem and weeps, that there would be another outcome. That we would let Him take us in. Its never too late nor to hard to change or be change or to be saved or rescued or for a miracle. It all begins with ayour choice.

That’s why they call it a leap of faith.

You have no guarantee that any of this Jesus-stuff we teach and preach will work. It may work for others. But you have no guarantee. But don’t knock it till you try it. People like me will go on and on about the goodness of God in our lives. Whats crazy is that sometimes we’ll do it EVEN WHILE WE’RE SUFFERING TOO! We’ll stand up in public places or we’ll share it over coffee with you in unexpected moments in restaurants bars hospitals street corners or in emails or facebook. You will hear people all your life talk about “their walk” but none of that is of any use to you as long as its about somebody else.

When the doctor says…. Take the pill. You’ll never know if its the placebo or the real thing. You don’t have a guarantee. In fact sometimes you go to the pharmacy and may take drugs that eventually are bad for you! But because you believe hosptials and pharmacies are places of healing you’re willing to take the risk. To trust. TO BELIEVE that you will find healing there.

What about in God’s arms. I mean what have you got to lose? Either God is real or He isnt. I’m not saying half believe then turn to God. I’m sayin TAKE A LEAP. DON’T STEP OFF. I say taking a running jump.

Maybe some of you right now need something from God in your life. But you’ve been and will continue to just half trust and half-step with God. I’m saying…for once in your life. Do it like Hebrews 11. And Romans 12. I’m saying wake up today in your mind. Wake up. Build up your courage. Believe the same way you believe when the doctor writes a prescription. I’m saying believe the pharamacist is giving you something good. A cure. A reliever of symptoms.

No one, goes to the pharmacist for a flu shot thinking that they will get diarrhoea. No one. We’re almost programmed or socialised to believe that what they give us will cure us.
Isnt it so sad that we go to building every weekend where we potentially can get so much more. Where we are told and read that we worship a God who is so much bigger and more powerful. And yet. Myself included. I’ve never believe God like I believe the pharmacist!

So what you’ve been let down. So what God hasn’t come through for you sometimes. Or so you believe.

But lets get real. WE KNOW that doctors sometimes have NO CLUE whats wrong with you and the best they can do is a trial and error of trying this drug or that…..we’ve heard of cases where doctors even say “I’m sorry theres nothing I can do”

And in some moment of insane logic, we still take ourselves and loved ones back to these doctors. Don’t get me wrong. I respect them. But medicine is NOT and exact science. And doctors never claim it is. Theres no warantee on a doctors treatment. Lawyers don’t guarantee that they can get us acquitted.

Schools and universities don’t guarantee that they can give us success or even a basic 50% pass rate on the stuff they are actually teaching even if you study and do all the assignments. They can guarantee that you will UNDERSTAND the material even if you’re bright! The best they can do is promise.

Yet. When we enroll our kids in school. We never doubt that their life will be better. When we go to the top lawyers. We never doubt that they can get us acquitted or win our case. We actually pay top dollar/rand/franc/deutschemark etc thinking more that what we ask or need is what they will get! You see what I mean? And even when they get it wrong. When the situation comes up again. We go back anyway. To the people who cant guarantee results.

BUT OH NO, if we feel God hasn’t come through for us the way we want even once….we give up on Him or we hold it against Him.

How come no one ever gives up on hospitals? God doesn’t make us sign indemnity or release forms! But these institutions make us sign these forms and when they fail us we still pay them!

All I’m saying is this. Whether today. Or tomorrow. Or next week. Or month or year. Sometime before you die or before its to late to make a difference in a situation that’s really important to you.

Treat God like the pharmacist. Believe first 110% that when you go in with the flu you will come out with a cure or a pill. Before you open your mouth or even think of praying. Do whatever you need to to to get yourself to RISK and LEAP into faith….AND THEN approach God. And ask. For once. Just once. Try it

All or nothing.

Give it your best shot or quit
Give in or give up
Do or die.

Just once.

Even for one hour or one minute or one second. Just once in your lifetime just trust God 100%. Just be at peace 100%. Just have faith 100%. Just love God 100%.
Just forgive the unforgiveable for just one minute 100%. Just say sorry with no excuses and meant it for just a minute 100%.
Just love your job your boss and all your colleagues 100%.
Just love your cheating husband for just one minute 100%. Just own up to what you did behind your husaband’s back even though he doesn’t know for one minute 100%.
Just believe your child will be ok and will finally come back to you for just one minute 100%.
Just believe IN YOUR CHILD for just ONE MINUTE 100%
Just respect your faithless father 100% Just trust your weak unreliable mother 100%. Just honour them.

Be the patient in the placebo effect, who gets better, just cause the doctor running the experiment says…you might get better. Don’t be the other patient who decides to risk nothing, give up and just stay sick. Can you see how twisted that is? The one who doesn’t get better, actually doesn’t know that they might actually be cured. They have the potential, like the others, to get better. But somehow, the word don’t get through, so their hearts and minds don’t take the leap of faith and believe its possible. SO they continue to suffer.

 (New King James Version)
14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:
“ Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Theres that concept again. Confidence…..please , children of the Most High. Saints, members of the royal court. You who bear the name of Jehovah. You who are the spitting image of God Himself. You who God care enough for, to bleed to death for. If only you could have steadfast confidence in God not by yourselves but through the Holy Spirit. Be the patient, who hears the doctor and their life, their troubles, their bodies, their marriages, their relationships, their jobs, their families, their friendships..THEIR CHOICES…..get better

For just…..

One minute
One 100%

Shalom
