01 Our God is awe-SOME

Sometimes … its important to remember that God isnt human.

Even though we’re made in His image (more about that later), we’re similar to Him. We are like Him but He is waaaayyyyy more than us. He’s bigger, smarter, stronger … all the “-er”s you can think of.

He is all-knowing, all-powerful, all-places-at-once, spaceless, timeless, immaterial, personal, loving, just, merciful…

Think about this as carefully as you can … then remove all limits from your mind

… then you’re just beginning to start to grasp a portion, a part of, a piece of who God really is.

He really is really Big!

He really is awe-inspiring, awe-SOME

And He really does love you!

Lets see … so if we can give God the right size in our minds, wouldnt affect everything else we read about Him in His Word? Wouldnt it affect how we pray to Him? Wouldnt it really actually affect us?!

Well lets look at Genesis chapter 1:

  • No day: In the beginning God….that one statement…I don’t even know where to begin.
  • Day 1: God said Let there be light – And God saw the light, that it was good. And God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day. And darkness God called it Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
  • Day 2: God said Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters. Let it divide the waters from the waters. Above and below. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day
  • Day 3: God said Let the waters under heavens be gathered together in one place and let dry land appear. God called the dry land Earth. And the gathering of waters together God called Seas.
  • Day 4: God said Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide day from the night.
  • For signs and seasons, days and years. Then God made two great lights, the greater to rule the day, the lesser to rule the night. He made the stars also. And God saw it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
  • Day 5: God said Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens. So God created great sea creatures and marine life and bird life of every kind. And God saw that I it was good.
  • And God blessed them saying Be fruitful and multiply, fill the waters in the seas and let birds multiply on the earth. So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
  • Day 6: God said Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind. And it was so. And God saw that it was good. Then God said Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; ….And saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Let the earth bring forth.. How fast is fast?

So lets go back a bit

How fast is God though?

  • Day 1: God said Let there be light – And God saw the light, that it was good. Divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day. And darkness God called it Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Speed of light is

  • 299 792 458 m/s
  • 1,080,000,000 km/h

Day 1: God said Let there be light

And God saw the light that it was good

And divided the light from the darkness

  • Speed of light is
  • 1,080,000,000 km/h

So… God is fast enough to see light? When’s the last time you turned on the light switch and saw light fill the room you’re in?! Or when’s the last time you were waking around at night with a flash light or torch in your hand, and when you switched it on, were you able to see the beam of light shoot out from the torch?

No of course not! For us humans light is instantaneous…but our God can not only see it go by Him, He can catch it and divide it and make it stay in one place and call that light Day and the darkness Night! Remember on Day 1 of creation there was no sun no moon no stars.

Wanna try one more time? How fast is God?

  • 16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.
  • 19 So when they had rowed about [a]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. 20 But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

yes immediately…He was there and they were there with Him in the boat.

How BIG is God

Again the idea here is to try get a piece of the picture, a right-size for God in our minds. A there are plenty of verses in the Bible where God talks to us about this and with good reason.

Here are a few really cool really important size type verses from the Word of God. These are just a few and they are so much more!

** Meditational Question: Is that what you mean whenever you start the Lord’s prayer “Our Father“… When those words come out of your mouth, or when your thoughts recite that line … what do you really mean?

Check out the below. Its a comparison of our planet The Earth in comparison to other planets in our solar system.

Look at the comparative size of Earth to Jupiter!!!

WOW Moment: Creation is so beautiful. And so big. And yet in God’s hands so small!!! God can measure the whole universe, all of it, between His thumb and forefinger. You know that song ” He’s got the whole world in His hand…” ..well thats still not the right size.

He can count dust. The particles 1 by 1! Read the below and see what I mean!

David once wrote God a poem (yes you can write God poetry… you can serenade Him. You can woo Him. You can adore Him.) He said below. This section in your BIble, this poem is entitled The Perfect Revelation of theLord. Its almost as if, when David looked up into the night sky above with all the stars… that God was able to give Him a perfect or flawless idea or sense of how small he, David, was and how BIG God was. Its almost as if that distance between David on the ground and the stars in the night sky let David see how far away in size and intelligence and power God was. Check it out

19 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Later on David ends Psalm 19 by calling God “…my Strength, and my Redeemer“.

Ok last piece then we close this whole thing off.

Look at our Sun. It powers everything on Earth, from light to energy to weather. It is so powerful that we should be grateful that God designed our sky (the heavens) to actually block about 70% of the earth’s light from reaching us. The sun delivers more energy to earth in one hour than humanity consumes over one entire year. And remember thats after the “firmament” blocks 70% of it.

Prayer point: God knows what He’s doing doesnt He?! So surely He can help you with whatever challenges you may be going through right? Just pray on this a bit.

So the Sun is massive and powerful. But its not the biggest star that we know of at all!!! Check out these below. And these are just the stars we know about! We keep discovering bigger ones every day!

One of the biggest stars we know of is called VY Canus Majoris. If we replaced our Sun with this star, it would be big enough to swallow all the planets all the way out to and including Jupiter! 1.3 million earths inside the sun… Canus Majoris could contain 500,000 suns!

But whats the point of all this astronomy? Look at what the Word of God says one more time.

25 “To whom then will you liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One.
26Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things,
Who brings out their host by number;
He calls them all by name,
By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power;
Not one is missing.

uh… WOW. God has a name for each star in the universe. And a He counts them?!

But wait, there’s more!!! How about you?

See the God we serve

The God we worship

The God we love.

God our Father, who art in heaven… see we His children, humans, breath in oxygen and we breath our carbon dioxide. No one knows what God breaths in, but the Word says He breathes out all of the above

So what does He expect from us….

: 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled.

… uh verse 48 the end of it says what now?!… That Jesus would have kept on walking by the boat, in the middle of a storm bad enough to drown them, over water, to the other side of the shore!!! Why?

Answer?

Who’s yo Daddy?!

Ok… in King James English… here’s the problem. We dont do enough of verse 51. We arent amazed enough by God. We dont marvel enough about God. We dont stop and look at the things God has done and “cry out“. God is common. God is normal. God is theoretical. God isnt anything too wonderful.

But David had it right. He had the right reaction and the perfect revelation

“When I behold …. what is man, that you are mindful of him…” (Psalm 8:4Psalm 8:4

Its in the marveling, its in the perfect revelation. Its in the looking at His handiwork, its in there, that not just our salvation (for He is mighty to save) but in looking at the works of God is also our power and our purpose!

** Meditational Question: So… what are you facing right now in your life? What are your struggles your challenges your fears hurts pains, dreams, hopes desires… Whats going on with you right now? When you pray…is this GodDavid’s God who you have in mind when you close you’re eyes? Do you desperately need one of your prayers to be answered?…How about you start right there and lets test God and see when you worship Him for who He IS first before you even ask for anything. Just a thought… meditate on it.

Next installment? God took all the power above…and He accomplished man in “Our image, and Our likeness”. what does that mean?!!!

Shalom!
