Friendship and lightbulb moments

Yesterday I had the privilege of spending some time with some brothers.

People I share interests with, work with, admire and respect.

We had an agenda. Which we got through. But we also just took time to share our love for God.

Just a bunch of guys sitting round the table planning to take over the world but also worship the awesomeness of God’s glory.

Now we all know in most cases its business before pleasure. But as a Christian, I’ve got to tell you I enjoy the best of both worlds sometimes and pray to God for that to increase. I love it when you can start a presenation with a prayer or a business meeting with an agenda that you can dedicate to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to ensure that He gets His way.

Awesome experience.

Now I havent written a devotional in a while cause I’ve been moonlighting on facebook, and sms. I probably need a communication strategist to help me integrate everything lol. So I havent been quiet. Just gallavanting.

So here’s my word for you today it comes in two parts.

  1. You need people in your life who share your passion for God and can encourage you.
  2. You need people in your life who can be the spark that re-ignites the fire of your purpose rather than people who are stumbling blocks.

To make it practical.

If you are called to be a doctor.

1) You need people in your life who love God A WHOLE LOT, might have no clue about medicine, but their love for God makes them conduits for the Holy Spirit to be able to give you a word in season. And its also great when you can sit around a table in a restaurant crack jokes and get really deep but at the end of the conversation you walk away with that feeling and conviction (you need both) about the MAJESTY and AWESOME GLORY of God.

2) You need people in your life, who, because of their love for God and their love for you, are able to be used by God as a conduit to remind you and sometimes enable you to re-dedicate yourself to why you’re here on earth.

No obviously at this point if you don’t know your purpose then these two faith statements add little to you. And just sound nice. But if you know youre purpose. Even a little bit. And find at times that you either struggle or get derailed or get caught up by life or get caught up in sin. I have a question for you.

Sometimes when you’re low you cant hear the voice of God easily. But if there’s no one, who in those moments of self-inflicted silence, no one…who can help you get back up on your feet and on THE RIGHT PATH, how will you achieve your mission in life? Having friends who can cheer you up when you’re down is great. Laughter is great medicine for weary bones. Its a soothe and a balm. But you’re here for big things. Or at least I hope you know that?

More questions….

How many of your friends get wonderfully angry with you when you aim too low?

How many of your friends or people who intimately connected to you (not acquaintances or just work mates but people deep in your heart) can guide you with the right words to say to help you see reason when you’re about to make a big life mistake?

How many of your friends can risk insulting or offending you when you’re doing wrong or more importantly doing yourself wrong when it all seems to everyone else that you’re doing great and doing right, again by yourself? Doing right by you, yourself…do you even know what that means?

How many of you have someone who hurts when you hurt and goes to God with that ON YOUR BEHALF?

How many of you have people who lose sleep over you? Want nothing from you, need nothing from you, enjoy interceding for you?

How many of your friends can hear the voice of God when you cant? Cause you don’t want to or are afraid to…..

When David was low, who was there to pick him up. At least for a while….Jonathan. Had it not been for Jonathan, David would never have been king and would never have learned sacrificial friendship. David might have turned out to be a tyrant. Very few men in fact very few nations could stand up to David on the field. By the time Solomon and Solomons children get to the throne the nations around Israel were paying Israel tribute. Tribute so high they begged David’s descendants to be more lenient with them!!!

But think of this…every day David woke up, and sat in that place of authority power and influence….he couldn’t take credit. We know he wasn’t perfect. But will you stop being judgmental for a second and ask yourself about what he achieved. Compare David’s approach to rule with Nebudchadnezzar. The one man says “what is man that Thou are mindful of him” and further ….” is there no one of the house of Jonathan to whom I might show kindness….I owe my throne to my friend”. David the conqueror. The giant-slayer. The God-enforcer. The greatest king in all of Israel. The man after whom Jesus decided He would name Himself before coming as a human. So deep was God’s own love and respect (yes I said that) for David. God had such pride…. In David…His boy!…His son!…that when God finally walked the earth….and you called out Jesus! Jesus!!! There are times when Jesus might not stop. But when you called out SON OF DAVID!!!..everyone would stop in their tracks and hold their breath, and Christ would HAVE to stop. Be forced to stop. It was one of his own favourite titles. And Jesus would ask…”what would you have of me” when everyone else was trying to shush the poor blind beggar. It was equivalent to calling Jesus “SON OF GOD” if you called Him son of David. How amazing. That God would use your name. Just a mere human. A mere man. To TITLE HIMSELF. And this is after David is gone and buried and many times stuck under the stigma in OUR minds of adultery and murder. This is the way we look at him. Yet, it is David, that God gave a detailed description of the crucifixion day. It is David, during vision, that was able to describe hundreds of years before EXACTLY what would happen to Jesus on the Cross and the WORDS Jesus would cry out on the Cross. That’s David….. Will there ever come a time…in YOUR family…where God Himself will address or call Himself to your children as the God of Andrew [replace your name there]. Will God ever reach a point, just because of how closely your heart resmebles His and how much you love Him, will God ! Ever! Get to a point where if He appears or speaks to kids kids kids….that He would title Himself majestically using your name?

Whats your relationship with God like.

Compare that to Nebuchadnezzar. Who never had the privilege of being rescued by a friend. Being died for by a friend. Being used by God to overcome insurmountable odds. Yes he was an emperor of emperors. But where he failed is when he stood on the walls of Babylon and said “Babylon…is this not the great city which I have built”. (Suddenly the scene shifts and we see the king chewing on grass in the field and on your screen at the bottom, they write subtitles…”year 1” “year 2”…..etc “year 7”.

What was the difference between the two men?

Partly…the friends we keep.

Your friends…will help you into and join you in greatness….or your friends will deny you and drain you of greatness.

Family is harder.

But in the relationships we choose, what kind of people in deep inside your heart, where spiritual things are decided and the world around is shaped? Its in your heart where life takes shape!

You don’t believe me?

Here are a few verses to conclude. Read them and decide for yourself.

1.  You need people in your life who share your passion for God and can encourage you = contagious-Jesus =

13 Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced
exceedingly more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been
refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have boasted to him about
you, I am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so
our boasting to Titus was found true.

23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He
who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to
stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves
together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much [guys just go to church or hang with your spiritual friends or where you can feed the Jesus-hunger in you. EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT]

2.  You need people in your life who can be the spark that re-ignites the fire of your purpose rather than people who are stumbling blocks = strengthen you, cause they been where you are or been through stuff that made them strong! They help you not to let life derail you or if you are derailed they help you get back on track=

12 For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these
things, though you know and are established in the present truth. 13 Yes,
I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by
reminding you, (Its not about telling you when you’re wrong.A believer is always concerned for the well being of others…a believer is always looking beyond now and wants more for you, they correct you to stir you up…someone, cause of the Holy Spirit they are able to do both. Tell someone they’re wrong and walk away and leave them stirred up for God…is that how you do it? 🙂 )

31 And the Lord said,[a] “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you,
that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your
faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your
brethren.” (yes…youre fall and recovery can catch and lift up others…youre struggles are custom designed for you, they’ve got custom interior (private stuff no one can relate to even if you share with people), because in this lifetime you will meet people who need life and death…what you have learnt from your mistakes and victories… If you could exchange the things you’ve been through, good and bad…who would you give them to!!???!!! And if you could take someone else’s struggles and victories who’s would you take )

. And…it also means that when you mess up and mistreat the ones you love or judge the ones you should love wrongly and you know better….it means you’re stuck with no other options if statements such as “you’re like God” bother you. It means you don’t get the “in-Christ” part. Through Him….you can do all things…how many times must we read that…. Theres no limit to your spiritual ability. None whatsoever. One day…we’ll, me included, fully believe that…
Do you love at all times?…even people that are supposed to be easy to love? )

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it
was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of
God.  [ Is God your friend? Close friend? Will He tell people about you when you’re gone lol…the Bible is either a template for us or its just a nice story…but you’re afraid to decide which cause either way, you cant stay comfortable with where you are after you make a choice 🙂 ]

Though to the world it may not seem so, because times some outshine the others because we’re outside looking in….but great men always walk together. No man of great achievement and accomplishment arrived at his point in destiny by walking with the mediocre or the dispassionate or the un-inspired.

Some start the journey together and along the way, some friends are lost. Some die. Some are channeled away into their own diverging path and purpose. Some were there, like some friends in your life, for only a season.

No matter how it turns out. No matter where the gang all ends up.

Greatness walks with greatness. And purpose is a common driver and foundation, that pushes and holds up people like the points of a constellation. We may all be going in different directions. And our light may be following its own path. But when you look up at the sky at constellations, you cant pick out single stars. Even the lone star, looks alone because of the angle you’re looking from. If you could move back far enough, you’d see….Orion is a belt and all the shining light, collectively points the way for those who’s hopes and dreams make their heads look up and aspire.

But you cant look up, when you got people in your life who drag you down.

Make a choice.

Shalom
